Workshop Taster: Fat Brains

As a qualified doctor, I know that just like the rest of our bodies, our brain is affected by what we eat. It's predominantly made up of fats (around 70%) and needs Omega-3 to function at an so that individual neurons function at an optimal level. If we eat the wrong fats, especially trans fats, our brain has to make do and substitutes the wrong fats into our brain architecture, which can have a dramatic effect on how well we think. It's like building a house using the wrong cement to hold the bricks together.

Brain Fit is all about making sure your brain is tuned up for maximum performance every day to improve your memory and clear your thinking. By focussing on proven scientific research into how the brain works, it shows you how to build your neural fitness so that you can deal with fatigue or impending information overload more effectively.

It's about more than 'mind gym' style exercises – like any other part of your body, getting your brain fit involves physiology, and that means knowing how to build a brain-healthy routine into your lifestyle physically as well as mentally. Workshop Taster: Work Distractions

Research has shown that multitasking is counterproductive – we make more mistakes, take longer to get the same amount done, and generally do it less well than if we'd focussed on one thing at a time (one reason for not texting while you're driving...). But in today's work environment, it's hard to avoid distractions, so you have to consciously take control of your environment and work to your strengths. For instance, if you think best in the morning, schedule work on that brain frazzling report for first thing, and organise meetings for after lunch.

Brain Smart is about using your brain effectively so that the time you spend on a project is more productive, avoiding the after-lunch slump, procrastination and distraction. It will enable you and your team to work faster and better.

By understanding how our brains process the myriad of stimuli they receive, you will learn how to really pay attention and focus on what you're doing, so that you can work faster, more innovatively, and make better decisions.

Workshop Taster: Knowing Unknowns

When human brains were developing on the plains of Africa, the ability to spot anything new and treat it as a potential threat was a key survival skill - and humans became very good at it. In a modern workplace, threatening predators (at least four legged ones) are thankfully rarer but we still unconsciously scan for new 'dangers' and our deep seated instincts can still kick in. We switch to 'high alert', making us wary and defensive and diminishing our ability to work effectively with other people. Understanding and managing these ancient reactions improves how we work together.

Understand How To Lead

Brain Change is about working better with other people by understanding how our brains work – your team's, your boss's, but most importantly, your own. It will enable you to recognise the patterns of how you and other people think so you can work with the grain and find effective solutions.

Neuroscience has revealed a wealth of information about how our unparalleled ability to live as social animals has allowed us as human beings to evolve, survive and thrive. It's a vital skill for anyone, but leaders in particular will find developing their social cognition skills key to engaging and motivating their teams.

Becoming More mindFULL

Six Week Program

Mindfulness meditation has been practised for thousands of years as an avenue for people to learn how to stay in the present moment, to notice more, to be more aware and to develop mental clarity.

Today, the findings from brain science have allowed us to understand far more about the benefits of meditation practice and its wider application to many different aspects of our daily lives. Whilst the origins of mindfulness meditation are based in Buddhist and Christian religion, many people have benefitted from the practice, simply learning it as a technical skill.

Some of the many benefits of mindfulness include:

  • Better attention skills
  • Improved cognition - memory, problem solving and decision-making
  • The ability to retain clear thinking even when under pressure
  • Better management of distractions
  • Enhanced pain management - coping with pain rather than being dominated by it
  • Reduced stress and symptoms of anxiety and depression

Many people learn mindfulness as a life skill to allow them to become more mindfull in all aspects of their lives, whether it be in finding it easier to get more done every day, or a sense of greater control of their environment and feeling a greater sense of calm and contentment.

This six-week course will provide you the tools to learn how to be more mindfull in all areas of your life. In the introductory workshop you will discover the elements of what is required to learn to meditate and what is going on in your brain. The following weekly classes  provide you with the opportunity to practice different mindfulness meditations that you can assimilate easily into your life. You  decide which meditation suits you. There is no right or wrong way, just the way that works best for you.
