You're not alone. Our hyperkinetic environment is causing many people to feel somewhat overwhelmed, overstretched and exhausted. Time to press the pause button... and think of someone else.
One of our greatest rewards (as far as the brain is concerned) is doing something for someone else when you see they have the greatest need. One of humanity's greatest needs is not food, or medicine; it is access to clean drinking water.
Mindfulness meditation practice is sweeping the world as more and more people discover the benefits it provides:
- A calmer mind
- Reduced stress
- Clarity of thoughts
- Better decisions
- Enhanced physical and mental well being
- Better sleep
In addition neuroimaging has shown meditation enhances the brain's natural plasticity, promoting the formation of new synapses and strengthening existing ones.
Plus it has been shown to maintain our telomeres. Telo what?
Telomeres sit on the end of our chromosomes like the caps on shoelaces. Meditation has been shown to preserve telomere length and that means we live longer!
So, I would encourage you (if you are not already doing so) to learn how to meditate and start to enjoy a clearer mind.
It will only take ten minutes each day to start to gain the benefit.
I recently had the great pleasure of being on a mindfulness panel with Dr. Elise Bialylew and Jonni Pollard from One Giant Mind as part of Alicia Curtis' Revolutionary Lives Online Summit. Dr Elise is a fellow medical practitioner based in Melbourne. She specialises in coaching and teaching mindfulness practice and created Mindful in May several years ago. By choosing to sign up you will be eligible to receive daily instruction as an e-course to teach the "how" to meditate, a daily tip or practice to help you establish this new habit, numerous articles, videos and quotes to inspire you along the way PLUS by registering you will be donating to the cause Charity Water which is a not for profit organisation that builds clean water wells in the developing world.
I took part in the challenge last year and can't wait to get going with it again this May. If you would like to sponsor my efforts you can do so here.
And if you want a really easy app to get you going straight away, the free Learn to Meditate App from One Giant Mind is a great way to start.
